Bourgeois Genealogy

Thank you for visiting Don's genealogy site. This is a work in progress. There is much more to come. Take a look around, and do let us know if you have any questions, or concerns. Let us know if you find any errors. If any information about yourself or your family should not be part of this site, please contact Don and it will be removed promptly.

Don's paternal ancestors primarily have roots in the settlers of the German Coast area of the Louisiana colony upriver from New Orleans. They mainly arrived in Louisiana from French and German territories on both sides of the Rhine River. The original Bourgeois ancestor, however, arrived in the colony from the province of Acadie in Nouvelle-France.

The banner image next to the title above is of the Mississippi River looking downriver from the Vieux Carre. It was taken by Don on 4/1/2017 while aboard the steamboat Natchez.

The Widell Family

The family is said to be descended from Nils Widelius, born in Svedala, Skane, Sweden in 1709. His son Olaus Laurentius Widell, born 1746, started a large quayside trading business in Marstrand,Västra Götaland County, Sweden that came to be known as CM Widell. The business lasted until 1971 despite a disasterous fire in the extremely cold winter of 1947. The winter that year was so severe that the water in the fire hoses froze and nothing of an entire block could be saved. Since the 1950s, the Hotel Marstrand Maritim is located where the CM Widell business once stood.

The family tree on this website focuses on the branch of the Widell family leading up to my wife Helene

The Gorton - Omerso Family

The progenitor of the Gorton family was Samuel Gorton who emigrated from Gorton, Lancastershire, England, U.K. in the middle of thr seventeen century. His prominent role in the life of Massachusetts and in the founding of Rhode Island is well documented in many histories. His descendants number in the thousands.

The branch of his descendants that now reside primarily in Upstate New York is the main focus of my research leading to my late wife Karen.

Included in this family are the ancestors and descendants of Frank Omerso who arrived in America in 1913. Frank's son Albie married Jean Gorton. They were the parents of my late wife Karen.

Help Needed

Help Identify Her

Can you help identify the lady pictured above. The photograph was part of a collection given to my wife on a recent trip to Sweden. The collection was in the possession of Christer Widell at his death and given to my wife by his widow.

Please let me know if you have any information about her so that we can properly place her in the family tree.

Louis Pierre Bourgeois ???

The large image at the top left of the home page is purportedly my paternal grandfather Louis Pierre Bourgeois. It was found in the home of my father's sister in Gramercy, LA after her daughter's death. There were no notes identifying the person or the date taken. From the clothing it appears to be from the first quarter of the twentieth century when Louis would have been between thirty and fifty five years old.

If anyone has a different picture of Louis or can help verify that this is really him, please contact me.

Research Scope

Don's genealogy is focus on three families: His father Ellis and his ancestors; his wife Helene and her mainly Swedish ancestors; and his late first wife Karen and her English and Slovenian ancestors.
